About
Summer 2023 marks the exciting launch of the FIU LA Program’s innovative 3-phase leadership initiative, dedicated to nurturing and empowering STEM undergraduates and preparing them for leadership positions.
Our mission is clear: to cultivate a new generation of leaders who possess both exceptional academic prowess and a profound commitment to giving back to our community. This transformative program is designed to elevate LAs’ skills and talents, providing them with the tools they need to create a meaningful impact. By seamlessly integrating career development and in-demand skill enhancement, LAs will be equipped to forge powerful connections with community partners. Through invaluable experiences working alongside mentors, these outstanding FIU LAs will be primed to take on crucial projects that address pressing needs in our community, generating positive change that resonates far beyond the boundaries of our campus.
Together, we will shape a brighter future, one where STEM undergraduates thrive as influential leaders, driving progress and making a real difference in society. LAs are invited to join LAunchPAD’s first cohort! Apply to be part of Fall 2023 Launch and Accelerate phases.
Leadership Phases
- About: Career Development
- Eligibility: Worked as an LA at least 1 semester
- Prepares you for next step (grad school, industry position, etc.)
- Self-paced, semester long
- 1-on-1 meetings (optional)
- On transcript as an internship
- Time commitment: 1 hour a week
- How to enroll: apply to LA 1 Internship (SMT4946) and opt-into LAunchPad
- Free
- About: Skill development for LAs (Data analysis or Project management track)
- Acquire industry standard in-demand skills by track via Google certificate course(s)
- Eligibility: Worked as an LA for at least 2 semesters & completed LA 1 Internship
- Self-paced, semester long
- Monthly cohort meetings (required)
- Paid access to a Google certificate courses for the semester, contingent upon availability of funds.
- On transcript as an internship
- Time commitment: 3 hours per week (minimum)

LAunchPAD Internships Description
The Launch Phase of the LAunchPAD Leadership Program is about reflecting on career pathways. You will earn the Leadership Agility Badge, create a workforce ready resume and comprehensive LinkedIn profile. Most importantly, you will reflect on your career goals.
The Accelerate Phase of the LAunchPAD Leadership Program equips Learning Assistants with highly sought-after skills. Participants can choose between two tracks: Project Management or Data Analytics. Throughout the Accelerate Internship, LAs will complete two courses offered and certified by Google. LAs will also reflect on what they learn by using AI. In addition to completing these two courses, LAs will apply what they learn by designing a community project (Project Management Track) or by building a data dashboard (Data Analytics Track). LAs will be supported through monthly meetings with a facilitator to synthesize and better apply what they learn.
The Soar Phase of the LAunchPAD Leadership Program is in development. More information will be posted here prior to Fall 2024.
