Here we provide faculty with information about the hiring of their LAs and what to expect.
As you may know, faculty recruit and identify their LA team for their course(s). After identifying the LAs, faculty can submit their LA Hiring Form to the LA Program. The LA Program will then begin hiring the LAs listed on the form.
Depending on the type of LA, each LA will follow a specific hiring process. There are 3 types of LAs:
- New LAs submit an LA Application . They are also asked to apply on the FIU Careers Website, accept their offer letter, sign on, and take their I-9 and supporting documents to PC 224. New LAs can only work in the fall and spring semesters.
- Returning LAs only submit an LA Application. Since they are in the system, they don’t have to do anything further. A contract will be submitted and go through approvals. Returning LAs are eligible to work fall, spring, and summer semesters.
- First time Graduated Returning LAs (in some cases) will have to submit an LA Application . They are also asked to apply on the FIU Careers Website, accept their offer letter, and complete a background check. Graduated Returning LAs had to have completed the LA Seminar as prior undergrads.
Next, faculty can monitor when their LAs are cleared to work by checking an LA Program tool (you’ll receive by email). In addition, LA can view the FIU payroll calendar here as they will be paid bi-weekly: 2026 Payroll Deadlines
Students cannot start working as LAs until their hiring is completed. They also cannot be paid until all steps are finalized.
If your LAs have any trouble with their pay, or questions please contact us at laprogram@fiu.edu and kinavarr@fiu.edu , or give us a call at 305-348-7772 or 305-348-3335.
