LAs Support Remote Learning

Since FIU’s shift to remote learning and working in March, the LA program has continued to work with LAs, and faculty to assess, design, and implement the necessary supports for active, collaborative, and remote LA-supported classrooms. The work that LAs do to support students and faculty is essential to creating positive learning environments, especially during these turbulent times. To ensure the continued success of faculty-LA teams in supporting student learning the LA Program:

  • shifted the LA seminar to a synchronous remote course. This allowed new LAs the opportunity to learn important aspects of pedagogy while learning some of the tools used for remote teaching.
  • developed the Remote Teaching with LAs workshop series to introduce tools and activity structures that faculty can incorporate into the design of their LA-supported remote courses. Completion of these workshops, reflections, and a self-assessment allow faculty to earn the Remote Teach Ready badge.
  • created opportunities for different faculty-LA teams to share their experiences and learn from each other during check-in meetings throughout the summer.

As we look forward to the upcoming fall semester, we will offer the LA seminar as a synchronous remote course for new LAs, and will continue to offer resources for faculty and LAs to support their students as we all navigate these uncertain times.
