The LA Program at FIU

Since FIU’s shift to remote learning in March 2020, the LA Program at FIU has provided support for faculty and LAs to create active and collaborative remote courses. Along with facilitating the Remote Teaching with LAs workshop series the program has and will continue to provide resources for faculty and LAs. To learn more about these efforts, click here.

Learning Assistants (LAs) are undergraduate students, who, through the guidance of weekly preparation sessions and a pedagogy course, facilitate discussions among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement.

The LA Program at FIU, a part fo the STEM Transformation Institute, is currently the largest LA program in the US. In Fall 2015, the Provost announced a university-wide initiative and positioned the LA program to play a vital role in the transformation of undergraduate STEM courses. The LA model, that is the foundation of the LA program, originated at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The LA Program at FIU is an active participant in the LA Alliance.

If you’re an undergraduate student who is interested in applying to become an LA, you can apply here.
